December 7 Actions in Canada PDF Print E-mail
Written by Stop Climate Chaos

A new climate movement is emerging in Canada. On December 7, 2008, protests will take place across Canada as part of a global mobilization to stop the climate crisis. These protests will occur as world leaders are gathering for the next UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland. At this crucial time, we must demand that the Canadian government not only meet its Kyoto commitments, but also work towards a successor to Kyoto - we need a comprehensive treaty, to stop climate chaos now.

Organizing an event for December 7? Let us know at or ! We can help you get started, and list info about your event and organizing meetings.

LAST YEAR'S EVENTS, DECEMBER 2007

On December 8, 2007, protests took place in 37 Canadian cities (in 10 provinces) as part of the global day of action to stop climate chaos (6 times as many as the day of action in 2006).

1. Event Plans
1st Action: 12PM at Tomkins Park  (corner of 8th St and 17th Ave SW, infront of Steeps Teahouse)

In the first action at Tomkins Park, we will hand out flyers and sing carols for an undecided amount of time, then have a procession along sidewalks of 17th Avenue to Victoria Park LRT Station, leafleting along the way.

2nd Action:  3 PM at Chinook Mall (meet at the parking lot of Community Natural Foods south store)

In the second action, after converging at Community Natural Foods, we will enter Chinook Mall, distribute flyers to shoppers, sing our carols.

Because this action will happen on private property, we will certainly be asked by mall security to leave. Our police liaison (Steve) discuss the action with police/security while everyone else continues to distribute flyers and sing carols. Once the decision has been made to leave, then everyone will walk slowly  to the exit. This tactic is based on the assumption that the mall security will prefer not to make a highly visible spectacle in which polar bears, Santa and elves are escorted out en masse by security. We are only at risk of "trespassing" if we refuse to leave after being asked to leave by security.  After being asked to leave, we will take our action outside the front entrance and will most likely have to move to public property along MacLeod Trail.

*Important that everyone stays in character throughout action.*

2. Theme: Environmental Refugees
Santa, elves and polar bears are among the first to be affected by climate change. The reality is that many humans and animals are at considerable risk of becoming environmental refugees.  The elves and polar bears will be handing out information about the effects on climate change its subsequent creation of environmental refugees.  One side of the handout will have information, and the other side will have the lyrics to 4 or 5 activist Christmas carols that we will be singing.  We will also be carrying placards bearing news headlines related to climate change and environmental refugees.  There will be no speakers for the events; however one person will have a megaphone to broadcast details of the event to the public.  Everyone is encouraged to bring musical instruments and noisemakers.
